Natural disturbances are an important part of forest dynamics and create niches for many species to sustain and for interesting forest images.

Our research into natural recovery after disturbances takes place in some managed forests, which have been heavily impacted by natural disturbances, i.e. Sønderjylland (storm 1999), Thy (fire 2013), Bornholm (storm 1967).

After the disturbances, these forests have been left for natural succession, so that the structures and processes that support or inhibit the natural recovery can be studied.

In the cases we studied, we can see that that salvaging the wood after disturbances, poorer site conditions and deer browsing, inhibit natural recovery.

The presence of pre-disturbance legacies, in the form of surviving trees, advanced regeneration and deadwood support the recovery of the forest.

Under certain conditions, natural recovery can be a viable alternative for forest recovery in Denmark.

An innovative, environmentally sustainable structure that serves as both a rainwater management system and noise barrier was installed in a busy neighborhood in Copenhagen, Denmark. Not only does the system help to prevent rain from overflowing the city's drainage systems (its primary purpose), but it also mitigates noise pollution and preserves the city's green space.

In this video, we meet four key members of the multidisciplinary team behind the structure's design, including Marina Bergen Jensen, a professor of landscape architecture and planning at the University of Copenhagen; Tim Larsen, a simulation specialist; Vibe Gro, co-owner of PileByg; and Kristoffer Ulbak, a civil engineer and hydraulics specialist. They explain how the structure works as well as how its design was made possible using a holistic collaborative approach that relied on multiphysics simulation.

You might already know that data is not neutral. Our values and assumptions are influenced by the data surrounding us - the data we create, the data we collect, and the data we share with each other. Economic needs, social structures, or algorithmic biases can have profound consequences for the way we collect and use data. Most often, the result is an increase of inequity in the world. Data also changes the way we interact. It shapes our thoughts, our feelings, our preferences and actions. It determines what we have access to, and what not. It enables global dissemination of best practices and life improving technologies, as well as the spread of mistrust and radicalization. This is why data literacy matters.

A key principle of data literacy is to have a heightened awareness of the risks and opportunities of data-driven technologies and to stay up-to-date with their consequences. In this course, we view data literacy from three perspectives: Data in personal life, data in society, and data in knowledge production. The aim is threefold: 1. To expand your skills and abilities to identify, understand, and interpret the many roles of digital technologies in daily life. 2. To enable you to discern when data-driven technologies add value to people’s lives, and when they exploit human vulnerabilities or deplete the commons. 3. To cultivate a deeper understanding of how data-driven technologies are shaping knowledge production and how they may be realigned with real human needs and values.

The course is funded by Erasmus+ and developed by the 4EU+ University Alliance including Charles University (Univerzita Karlova), Sorbonne Unviersity (Sorbonne Université), University of Copenhagen (Københavns Universitet), University of Milan (Università degli studi di Milano), and University of Warsaw (Uniwersytet Warszawski).

The increasing amount of rainwater is a major problem in the cities.

In this video, Jan Støvring from the Section for Landscape Architecture and planning is at Ærøvej in Frederiksberg. The road was redesigned in 2016, to handle the increased amounts of rainwater. A special type of asphalt has been laid that can absorb the rainwater quickly and store it under the pavement before it is slowly released to the sewer system. This helps to avoid the basements being flooded during cloudbursts.

I denne video er Jan Støvring fra Sektion for Landskabsarkitektur taget til Ærøvej på Frederiksberg. Vejen blev klimasikret i 2016, så den kan håndtere de øgede mængder regnvand. Man har lagt en speciel type asfalt, der kan opsuge regnvandet hurtigt og lagre det under belægningen inden det langsomt frigives til kloaksystemet. På den måde kan man undgå at kælderene bliver oversvømmet under skybrud.

The lecture focus on the Danish scientists H.C. Ørsted and Niels Bohr, respective discoverers of classical electromagnetism and quantum physics. Their legacies connect today in modern quantum physics where the flow of electric currents and the fields that result can remain in an undetermined quantum state until measured.
Adding quantum indeterminacy to electromagnetism raises new and difficult unanswered questions and hints at unrealized technologies.
Charles Marcus is Villum Kann Rasmussen professor at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen and head of Microsoft Quantum Lab. He receives the H.C. Ørsted gold medal in physics and a travel grant for his work within the field of quantum mechanics and quantum technology.

In the history of the Food Science part 4 - We survived on the rye bread Professor of food chemistry Leif Skibsted is interviewing associate professor emerita Åse Hansen (both from UCPH FOOD) about the importance of bread for our nutrition and about the research in bread, sourdough, taste etc.

The rye came to Denmark at the end of the Iron Age, and the first clay ovens found for baking raised bread are from the Viking age. When people talked about bread, they always meant rye bread. The wheat bread was only eaten by the nobility and the rich, but today we know that the rye is far healthier for us, because we traditionally eat the whole kernel from the rye. We have traditionally milled the wheat to flour in such a way that 25% of the grain - and precisely that part with most nutrients - was sorted and used for animal feed. However, when eating whole wheat flour (also called graham flour), these nutrients are not lost. It is not about eating very coarse bread with lots of whole grains in it, but just about having to grind whole grains into flour instead of sorting out the coarser parts of the kernel, including the bran.

You also get an answer as to why the sourdough is so important to the taste of the bread, about the researcher Mikkel Hindhede, who during the First World War made experiments with his assistant Madsen to prove that a diet without much meat was preferable.

In Denmark, the modern history of food science begins with the establishment of the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University (RVAU) at Frederiksberg in 1858 – which today is a part of the University of Copenhagen. The RVAU employed researchers/teachers who, through research, dissemination and education, paved the way for a huge export adventure of butter and bacon at a time when Denmark was struggling to keep up the export of cereals.

One of the key researchers was Niels Johannes Fjord, the Niels Bohr of food science in Denmark. Fjord was extremely energetic and set up his own experimental institution, where he and colleagues from the RVAU developed brilliant solutions to problems that were crucial to Denmark’s economy and helped to create the foundation for the Danish welfare system. Fjord’s research became incredibly important when falling prices and high international competition in the grain market meant that Denmark had to majorly reorganise its agriculture. Butter and bacon became the new gold for the country’s export earnings. The question is whether today we are facing a similarly radical shift in food production?

The challenges of climate, human demand and the UN’s sustainability goals are forcing us to question our current food production. Perhaps we are on the threshold of a new revolution, having to come up with solutions to feed an increasing population in a sustainable way.

Professor of Food Chemistry Leif Skibsted is the host who shows us the past of Danish food science and draws threads right up to the present.

UCPH South Campus

South Campus is home to the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Theology. Approximately 15,000 students are studying at one of the more than 100 programmes taught at South Campus.

South Campus is located near the Islands Brygge metro station on Amager. The entire campus environment was developed with education and research in mind. Buildings contain modern auditoriums and educational facilities, including study rooms, quiet zones and comfortable spaces for students to immerse themselves in the research and learning environment.

UCPH City Campus

Studying at City Campus means being downtown Copenhagen. Everything the city has to offer is right outside the door. Nevertheless, it is easy to escape city noise in order to study or relax in one of the many beautiful, surrounding parks. The campus area accommodates the Faculty of Social Sciences and a part of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.

Centre for Health and Society (shown in the film) is located between the city lakes and the transport hub Nørreport. This is a place brimming with history as the buildings are the former district general hospital with high ceilings and a stylish architectural look. Teaching facilities are modern, and in 2013, the University opened a new building with three auditoriums.

I earned a PhD degree in Geology-Geoscience at the University of Copenhagen in January 2015. Since then I have been working at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland on the project aiming at predicting the arsenic content in groundwater of the floodplains in south-east Asia. Arsenic contamination of aquifers is considered one of the most pressing global human health problems. Thus, outcomes of the project will be of a major importance for the management of rural water resources.

This movie shows the fieldwork of ten young permafrost researchers from four Nordic Universities who set out to remote Zackenberg valley at 74 ° N in NE-Greenland. The students participate in a PhD course entitled AG 833 "High-Arctic Permafrost landscape dynamics in Svalbard and NE-Greenland". Goal of this course is to better understand the landscape history and to link present and future periglacial processes with carbon and nitrogen dynamics at two high-Arctic sites: Zackenberg valley in NE-Greenland and Svalbard. AG 833 is organised by the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), Norway, and the Center for Permafrost (CENPERM) at the University of Copenhagen, financially supported by Perma-Nordnet of NORDEN, a project as part of the "Nordic Ministerial Council" Arctic collaboration program in Norway.
